2008 AFL Draft Review - Brisbane Lions
Brisbane went into the 2008 National Draft with seven picks, and came away with a good set of youngsters that was highlighted by Daniel Rich at Pick 7. Along with Pick 7 the Lions also had Picks 25, 41, 57, 69, 81 and 82. The Lions decided to pass on Pick 82 and drafted six players. Let’s have a closer look at them.

2008 AFL Draft Review - Carlton Blues
After landing the biggest fish in the league, Chris Judd, and getting off the bottom end of the ladder for the first time in a few years, Carlton went into this year’s draft looking to supplement their young list with even more talent. High on the agenda was a quality small forward who could provide another option to take some of the heat off Brendan Fevola. In Chris Yarran, the Blues feel they have done just this.
Trading their 2nd round pick for young Fremantle ruckman Robbie Warnock means Carlton only had 4 selections in the draft - 6, 40, 65 and 80. Let’s take a closer look at who they selected:

Breaking News: Richmond Draft Ben Cousins in Preseason Draft
Despite saying yesterday that they were ‘highly unlikely’ to use their only selection in the 2008 AFL Preseason Draft to draft former Eagle Ben Cousins, Richmond have just landed the former Brownlow medallist with their number 6 pick.

2008 AFL Draft Review - Essendon Bombers
Essendon went into the 2008 National Draft with their eyes on young Northern Knights key position player Michael Hurley. After the retirement of Mal Michael and impending retirement of Dustin Fletcher it was expected that the Bombers would pick Hurley up with their first pick at 5. However with star midfielder Daniel Rich still on the board there was an outside chance they may go for him. The Bombers also had picks 23, 55, 67 and 79. They didn’t use pick 79 as they wanted a pick in the Pre-Season Draft in December.

2008 AFL Draft Review - Port Adelaide Power
Port Adelaide went into the 2008 AFL Draft with 7 picks, and came away with an excellent group of youngsters that should give them plenty to work with for years to come. Despite Fremantle passing on Daniel Rich at number 3, the Power stuck to their guns and picked up exciting hometown midfielder Hamish Hartlett with pick no. 4, and then also appeared to pull a major coup by picking up one of the draft’s sliders Jackson Trengove at no. 22. Those two names merely make up a 7 strong band of rookies however, so let’s take a closer look at them all.

Ben Cousins to Richmond? We Have You Covered!
Just as it seemed like Ben Cousins might be left out in the cold for the 2009 AFL season, a whirlwind was brewed up by the Richmond Tigers. There was a bit of a whisper around the club when they passed on their last selection in the NAB AFL Draft as it appeared to leave open the possibility of taking Cousins in the Pre-Season draft. Then yesterday this whisper grew into a media frenzy as Richmond put in a bid to place injured Graham Polak on the rookie list for 2009.
Since it has come out that Kevin Sheedy spear-headed this move, setting up a phone conversation between Terry Wallace and Ben Cousins in which Cousins made a personal plea filled with a level of enthusiasm that impressed Wallace and might resurrect his football career
Sheedy went on to release a statement yesterday supporting the prospect of giving Cousins a second chance:
2008 AFL Draft Review - Fremantle Dockers
Fremantle went into the 2008 National Draft with the number 3 pick and for most of the lead up to the draft it looked a no brainer that they would pick talented Western Australia midfielder Daniel Rich. However as the draft came closer it was apparent that they had their heart set on other young Western Australian with that pick. They also had picks 21, 24, 37, 53, 56, 68 and 77. Fremantle used all their eight picks, making them the biggest player in this year’s draft.

2008 AFL Draft Review - West Coast Eagles
When you are trying to get your footy club back on track, nothing helps things along like some early draft picks in the National Draft. Thanks to one of their worst on-field performances in the club’s history, the West Coast Eagles were able to console themselves somewhat with 3 picks inside the top 20, and used five picks overall - 2, 18, 20, 36 and 52. After the Chris Judd deal last year, which gave them 4 picks in the top 22, as well as promising young forward Josh Kennedy, the Eagles have a lot of young talent that they look set to turn to for many years to come.
The picks they had this year could quite easily turn out to be one of the best crop of youngsters taken by any club in this year’s draft, however the chance of high reward also comes with some level of risk. Let’s take a look at their draftees…

2008 AFL Draft Review - Melbourne Demons
Melbourne went into the 2008 National Draft with the coveted number 1 pick and their choice of the best young player in the country. They also had picks 17, 19, 35, 51, 64 and 76. They used there first six picks and chose to pass on Pick 76 so they could have first pick in the pre-season draft.
