AFL Fantasy – Die Hard Dream Team Captains – Round 18
July 31, 2008 by Jesse Penfold
ARRRRGHHHHH Captains time again, and even though my season is pretty much over after Pavlova screwed me on the weekend and I cannot really be f$cked, I cannot leave the readers hanging.
(Check the wrap up of round 17′s action here – including my sizzling form with captain selections)

| 10 | Kane Cornes | Port Adelaide | 99.8 | $391,500 |
*Bradd Dalziell has only played two games.
Now for the games….
COLLINGWOOD v HAWTHORN
Dane Swan – 102.75 over the last four. Dane has been dipping just below the 100 mark the last few weeks, but isn’t putting up anything that will destroy your week. He has posted 98 and 125 in his last two against the Hawks, and averages 104.5 over his last four at the G. Nothing amazing here.
Alan Didak – 86 over the last four. Alan is in no way the darling of DT coaches that he was earlier this season, in the midst of average form he is no way a captain choice either. He has posted 87 and 71 in the last two against Hawthorn.
Paul Medhurst – 96 over the last four. For Medhurst inconsistency is his only consistency, and he hasn’t done much against the Hawks with just 48 and 74 in their last two contests.
Lance Franklin – 83.25 over the last four. It is just a matter of time for Buddy to explode and slot all his shots on goal for a mega DT foray, the question is who wants to be the one to predict when that weekend occurs? Not me, although he did pump the Pies for 146 earlier this season.
Luke Hodge – 92.25 over last four. Just 60 and 79 in his last two against the Pies.
Sam Mitchell – 85 over the last four. Sammy doesn’t mind playing Collingwood with 122 and 101 in their last two contests, picking him as your captain is a stretch though.
Die Hard Captain – the winner of the game will likely determine who is captain material from this match, and I am not ready to stake a captain selection on something like that
ESSENDON v MELBOURNE
Brad Green – 104.75 over his last four. Back in this weekend from injury, Greeny has been in top form this year so his shocker last season against the Bombers shouldn’t be too much of a worry.
Cameron Bruce – 106 over last four. Bruce has been firing away this year and posted the odd massive captain drooling score. He had 103 against the Dons last season.
Brent Stanton – 120 over last four. Stants recent average is still bolstered with his massive 175 and 134 in consecutive weeks, and he is very much capable of matching those against Melbourne. He only managed 63 against the Dee’s last year.
Die Hard Captain – tough to pick one from this lot, but I will go with Stanton expecting the Bombers to run over Melbourne pretty easily
ADELAIDE v CARLTON
Scott Thompson – 82.5 over the last four. Thomo just keeps shrinking week by week. You would think given the Crows current situation it would be the opposite, but alas…I would forget about him as captain despite his 120 against the Blues earlier this year (remember Gibbs is in top form and will probably have the job on him).
Tyson Edwards – 101.75 over the last four. Consistency consistency consistency, unfortunately it isn’t consistently way over the 100 mark. Tyson had 99 against the Blues earlier this year.
Marc Murphy – 80.75 over the last four. Was back in the mix last week as the Blues ran all over the Bullies, Murph pumped a 108 against the Crows earlier this season as well.
Judd and Stevens – still sticking with the not consistent enough over the 100 mark for captain selection (seriously Judd, no disrespect)
Die Hard Captain – skip this game
NORTH MELBOURNE v BRISBANE
Brent Harvey – 101 over last four. Still pounding away at the 95-105 mark week in week out. Love Boomer in your mid field, but not as your captain. He had 92 against the Brisbane earlier this year.
JB – 95.5 over last four. JB smoked North for 133 earlier this year, and is averaging 116 against them over the last three. Not in top form, and neither is his club.
Simon Black – 76.5 over last four. Forget it Blackie.
Bradd Dalziell – if you really want to roll the dice, I mean he does have more d’s in his name than you’d expect, so maybe he will get more DT points as well.
Die Hard Captain – just do not like this game either. COME ON GIVE ME SOMETHING…ahhh Geelong up next
GEELONG v RICHMOND
Jimmy Bartel – 130 over the last four. THIS IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT, Jimmy is back into that Brownlow form and just killing teams with little Ablett Jnr out. He is averaging 110 against the Tigers in their last few matches and I would expect him to teach the young boys in Tigerland a thing or two this weekend.
Joel Corey – 124 over the last four. Another in blistering form, Corey is a great captain choice, and has had 91, 134 and 104 in his last three against Richmond. Expect him to fill it up again this weekend. (Note the only thing separating him from Bartel is he is only averaging 98 over his last four at T-Dome, while Bartel is notching up 108 per).
Andrew Mackie – 99.75 over the last four. In decent nick Mackie, and a rare great DT backman – not a captain though.
Matthew Richardson – 104.5 over his last four (a round off with injury there, and a low score). Richo loves playing the Cats too and has posted 101, 106 and 85 in his last three against them, but even more he loves T-Dome, averaging 126 in his last four games there.
Delidio (101.5 over last four), Brown (105.5 over last four), Bowden (100 over last four) – all three are playing great footy, and top DT footy, but you just wouldn’t go them as captain over some of the bigger names above.
Die Hard Captains – James Bartel (my personal captain), Joel Corey and Richo, three big game busting captains in the mix here!
WESTERN BULLDOGS v SYDNEY
Cross, Boyd, Aker, Murph, Gian, Johno, Coons – The little crew from the Doggies are just not doing it right now, and apart from Johno none have managed to notch up an average over 100 against the Swans in recent contests. As usual I’d say steer clear of teams playing the Swans.
Brett Kirk – 98.5 over last four. Nahh
Ryan O’Keefe – 102.5 over last four. In crushing form with 138 and 155 in his last two matches, the problem is he has only gone over 100 in three games this season and that isn’t a risk worth taking.
Die Hard Captain – forget this game
ST KILDA v PORT ADELAIDE
Kane Cornes – 110.75 over the last four. Kane doing the work of two Cornes boys right now…well maybe if you are gauging it on Chad’s performance after returning from injury this year. He loves playing the Saints as well, averaging 122 over the last 3 contests.
Steven Salopek – out this weekend.
Nick Riewoldt – 122.5 over the last four. Nicky is still beasting with 115 in the loss last weekend, which said he gets locked up by Port regularly, only managing 62 against them earlier this season, and averaging just 57 in their last three meetings. Obviously he is great form, but going with him this weekend opens you to risk.
Die Hard Captain – Kane Cornes
FREMANTLE v WEST COAST
Dean Cox – 133.5 over the last four. Worries from everyone about his health, but they have been there all year. Deano is still racking up huge DT scores though, with 101 last week even though he pretty much played just 3 quarters. He had 96 against Freo earlier this season.
Matthew Pavlich – 111.25 over the last four (missed last week with knee injury). Only be a little weary over his knee as Pav has barely missed a game in his career (of course the week he chooses to it costs me the finals spot!! And no I will probably never forget this or let it go). Pav had 88 against the Eagles earlier this year, and doesn’t typically fair well in the Derby.
Die Hard Captain – Deano Cox

I am going with rock n roll birchal
