AFL Fantasy - Die Hard Dream Team Captains - Round 19
August 8, 2008 by Tristan Heffernan
It’s finals time, so welcome to Die Hard Footy’s special FINALS edition of Dream Team Captains.
With JP still off on a week long bender after his captain’s tips last week it’s up to me to fill in with some do’s and do not’s when it comes to picking your captain this week. So giddy up because I didn’t win the minor premiership in The Count Cup for nothing (although I did have G. Ablett to throw in as captain as required…)
DO - select Jimmy Bartel if you have him - scored 125 last time against the Demons, is in red hot form, and unlike some of his teammates, Bartel will still be in there chalking up the stats AD NAUSEAM while some of his mates decide to put the cue in the rack for the night. All this points to our DieHard Captain of the Week.
What - you’re feeling a bit underwhelmed because I just told you the obvious? Take a GHLAY - what do you want, the obvious top selection for the week, or someone’s smoky like Chris Knights last week who breaks down and gets you 24? If you have Bartel - take him and laugh to the bank.
DON’T - pick Alan Didak, Heath or Rhyce Shaw. Sorry couldn’t resist. How about a real
DON’T - pick Dean Cox, as much as it pains me to say it. His record against Hille is now well publicised, but let me spell it out for you - never scored over 100 against Hille, scored only 82 last time, and even last year at Subiaco he only notched up 71. Even though he is a total DT freak, and still has been busting hundreds in roughly 3 quarters of game time - numbers don’t lie - steer clear of big Coxy!
DO - take Corey if you don’t have Bartel. Chalked up 130 last time against the Dees and has been in wonderful form. Gary Ablett is back you say? No matter - they’ll ease him back and if anything it’s just another star to take attention away from Corey. Ablett playing didn’t stop him notching 130 last time either.
As much as I feel like I’m stating the obvious just think - boring wins. Is winning boring? Thought not.
DON’T - take anyone in the Swans v Freo clash. Then at least you won’t have to watch it. Oh - you won’t be missing out on any big scores either.
DO - Take a long hard look at Kane Cornes. Knocked up a lazy 134 against the Blues last time, and also nailed 126 last time he played the Blues at the Dome. If you don’t have one of the big Cats, Kane is your next best choice.
DON’T - underestimate veteran Crow Tyson Edwards. 124 last time against the Tigers in Melbourne, and has 5 scores in excess of 100 in his last 9 outings - as well as two 99s! One of the most underrated Dream Team midfielders going around - if you don’t have an out and out gun to whack the captaincy on he is more than worthy.
DO - take the punt on Buddy Love if you’re a. likely to lose and need someone to pull out a monster, or b. you have no other option. Sure, Buddy is a freak and he has had 127 and 108 his last couple against the Lions.
But…
DON’T - Don’t come crying to me if Sauce Merrett keeps him to a 70 and you cost yourself a finals win because you went for the excitement machine over a sure thing in the midfield! Buddy can have the odd Dream Team shocker - do you feel lucky?
Finally, more DO’S include Brent Stanton running riot against a tanking Eagles at Subiaco, Ablett Jr - he must always be a DO even if he only had one leg, Sam Mitchell loves the action in Tassie, Scott Thompson looks back to form and killed the Tigers last time, and you can never really go wrong with Dane Swan.
And my other DON’T'S - don’t drink and drive, don’t lie, and Pie fans, DON’T give me that crap about you can now trade Didak for JB so it’s actually a good thing.
Best of luck for finals!
