Chris Yarran - 2008 AFL Draftee Profile

Chris Yarran is an exciting midfielder/small forward from Swan Districts who is a bit of wildcard in this year’s National Draft. He has shown glimpses of brilliance in games which is worthy of a top 10 pick, however he has also at times shown that he may not be up to AFL level which makes him a risky pick.

Height: 180cm
Weight: 84kg
Position: Forward/Midfielder
Club: Swan Districts

Who we think he may turn out like: Leon Davis
Who we hope he doesn’t turn out like: Ashley Sampi

Yarran is a very good mover who has great skills on both sides of his body. He is very much a one touch player who is very dangerous around goals, especially when he is given a bit of space. For a small player he can take a very good contested mark and is usually quick to recover at ground level if need be.

Yarran can be very in and out meaning he can go missing for stretches of time in a game but then has the ability to bob up and kick a couple of crucial goals or get a lot of the ball in a short space of time. At this stage he would lack to the fitness and endurance to be an AFL midfielder so that is something he would need to work on. His performance at the National Under 18 Championships didn’t do a lot to improve his positioning in the draft as he was only solid without being spectacular.

As to where Yarran may go in the draft - at the moment that is anyone’s guess. It would be no great surprise to see him go high because he shows immense talent, however the question marks over him in such a strong draft mean he could turn out to be a real steal if he slides down the list.

Where do you rate Chris Yarran as far as the small men go in this draft? Where do you think he might end up? Leave us with your thoughts.

The Semi Final against West Perth would have him as a top 5 draft pick were he won the game off his own foot (5 goals) but the Grand Final he was super quite and Swans ended up using another small forward after 1/4 time.

Expect him to go 1st round and with the right environment, he will become a star.
