Dayne Beams Rejects New Deal with the Pies - Waiting for Gold Coast?
April 16, 2009 by Stewart Brown
Collingwood young gun Dayne Beams has rejected a new three year deal from Collingwood which means he will be out of contract when home town team Gold Coast enters the competition in 2011.
GOLD Coaster Dayne Beams rejected a three-year deal from Collingwood in order to be out of contract when the AFL’s 17th side enters the competition in 2011. It was a rare snub for the Magpies, who now find themselves in the uncharted territory of facing a fight to secure the services of a player who, so far, has played only two senior games.
Gold Coast officials thought they had lost Beams when he knocked back a contract offer last year in favour of entering the national draft, in which he was selected by the Pies with their second pick, at No. 29.
But the 19-year-old, who has been among the Magpies’ best in the past two weeks, and will play in his home state against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba tomorrow night, has deliberately ensured he will be out of contract at the end of 2010 and eligible for a return home.
The AFL’s list building rules allow Gold Coast to poach one uncontracted player from each of the 16 clubs at the end of 2010, and Beams has catapulted to the head of the list.
Collingwood tried to keep him out of Gold Coast’s grasp by offering him an upfront three-year-deal, which is almost unheard of for draftees, but Beams chose to sign the standard two-year draftee contract.
Gold Coast Recruiting Manager Scott Clayton didn’t hide the fact that Beams will be a likely target of the Gold Coast.
He has been going well and there is still a pathway there. We want players who fulfil our playing capabilities and if they are Queenslanders, even better.
This has got to be a concern for not only Collingwood but other clubs with youngsters who could be tempted by a move to the Gold Coast. Beams was always going to be an issue for the Pies being from the Gold Coast originally.
Beams may only be using this as a bargaining tool for when he comes out of contract at the end of 2010. One would think if he continues to develop at his current rate then with two teams fighting over his services his next contract could be alot more lucrative than you would generally expect.
How concerned would you be if you were Collingwood? Are you worried about any players from your club fleeing to the Gold Coast? Leave us with your thoughts.

interesting…
Collingwood will be in the box seat due to him already being at their club but it does suck for them. I am sure they will try again a few times before 2011 for a contract extension and finals and a chance for premiership will help sway his decision.
The young man is obviously well-advised. I suspect we will see a fair amount of this going on, as players who are legit potential targets for the Cold Ghost use that possibility to milk more money.
I think it’s better for the competition if GC17 ends up trading some of its early picks for established players, even 3rd/4th yr players, to reduce the weird demographics that will be produced by concentrating 2010 and 2011 into one club to this extent and giving the other clubs a matching hole at a given age level for the next decade.
With the GC17 coming in 2011 what will happen with the AFL fixture? Does this mean there will be a “bye” for a team every week?
Lliam it does mean there will be byes incorporated into the season which im sure some fans wont like and some wont mind. Personally I wont be a huge fan of it.
Yeah I dont think that I will be a fan of it myself. Im also guessing that it will lengthen the seasons unless the AFL can find an 18th team. But I guess that its just the way things go. Thanks for the answer to my question.
