DHF Dream Team Captains – Round 5
April 22, 2009 by Jesse Penfold
WOOOOO, we are over the hump day and the downhill run to this weekends games has begun. It is time for the weekly captains look, tomorrow teams come out, the Footy Show hits and then Friday we are finalising our teams. A great feeling all round. Another great feeling is my top 4 all nailing over the 100 mark in round 4.
Jimmy Bartel (118.6 projected, 111 scored)
Joel Corey (110.5 projected, 115 scored)
Kane Cornes (110.2 projected, 103 scored)
Leigh Montanga (107.3 projected, 119 scored)
Sure I missed the GABLETT”s record equaling performance (155), but as Calvin said in his weekly captains review; you can’t ask for much better than several tips being offered all cracking the ton. And I go down with rest of you having Jimmy as my personal captain (not many weeks you are angry with a captain score of 111). Anyways
DHF’s captain average is now at 118 (based on the highest predicted scorer each week);
My personal captain average is at 123 (based on captain selected in my DT);
Let’s hit round 5 up:
Port Adelaive vs St Kilda (AAMI)
| Port Adelaide | Last 4 | Recent Ave against opp | Recent Ave at Ground | Season Ave | Predicted Score | |
| Chad Cornes | 109.2 | 107.3 | 87.0 | 109.2 | 103.2 | |
| Kane Cornes | 101.2 | 120.3 | 88.0 | 101.2 | 102.7 | |
| Steven Salopek | 99.5 | 105.0 | 93.5 | 99.5 | 99.4 | |
| Danyle Pearce | 100.2 | 24.0 | 100.8 | 100.2 | 81.3 | |
| Travis Boak | 98.5 | 92.5 | 87.8 | 98.5 | 94.3 | |
| St Kilda | ||||||

Very busy game for the Score Predictor (and myself!), not to mention a great kickout to the week with Port coming in fresh off a huge win over the reigning premiers and the Saints making their second Friday night trip to SA already this year (oh and bringing in that undefeated record). As for the captains, the Cornes are strong options as usual partiularly Kane who has destroyed the Saints in the past (120).
From the Saints all everything Leigh Montagna is one of the class picks of the round, wiht their other big scorers struggling in the past against Port and at AAMI. Montagna has been out of his mind so far this season and is looking to step up into a no-brainer captain option similar to some of those boys down at Geelong.
DHF Tip: Leigh Montagna
Essendon vs Collingwood (MCG)
| Essendon | Last 4 | Recent Ave against opp | Recent Ave at Ground | Season Ave | Predicted Score | |
| Brent Stanton | 100.2 | 94.25 | 98.75 | 100.2 | 98.4 |
| Collingwood | ||||||
| Dane Swan | 109.0 | 85.3 | 119.0 | 109.0 | 105.6 | |
| Josh Fraser | 115.5 | 80.0 | 115.0 | 115.5 | 106.5 | |
| Tarkyn Lockyer | 109.8 | 96.3 | 102.7 | 109.8 | 104.6 | |

ANZAC day. Blockbuster. 100 thou at the G. And I will be there watching from where the paratroopers enter during the pregame festivities (yes the seats are that bad). After last weeks performance against North I am completely writing off the Dons in this one and moving straight to Collingwood. Swan is a usual suspect, while Fraser and Tark have topped all expectations this year and should go for big scores again this week. A sleeper for anyone wanting to play a little Russian roulette is Travis Cloke who has just destroyed the Bombers in recent matches (115 over the last 3 matches).
DHF Tip: Josh Fraser
Hawthorn vs West Coast (AURORA)
| Hawthorn | Last 4 | Recent Ave against opp | Recent Ave at Ground | Season Ave | Predicted Score | |
| Sam Mitchell | 77.2 | 72.0 | 80.0 | 77.2 | 76.6 | |
| Lance “Buddy/Emu” Franklin | 86.2 | 61.7 | 107.5 | 86.2 | 85.4 | |
| Brad Sewell | 98.0 | 103.0 | 78.5 | 98.0 | 94.4 | |
| West Coast | ||||||
| Dean Cox | 109.5 | 103.3 | 90.0 | 109.5 | 103.1 | |
| Matthew Priddis | 98.8 | 119.0 | 99.3 | 98.8 | 104.0 | |
| David Wirrpanda | 92.0 | 51.0 | 51.0 | 112.0 | 76.5 | |

Remember the days when Hawthorn seemed to be pumping out the DT scores we coaches love? Well they are a distant memory right now, with the Hawks miserable play has come miserable DT scores. Buddy EMU has been locked down by the Eagles in recent times, and despite his love for Aurora it will be tough going against the likes of Glass and E-Mac.
Cox and Priddis are doing their usual thing for the Eagles, but there are certainly better options this week.
DHF Tip: Don’t roll the dice on Panda!
Fremantle vs Sydney (Subiaco)
| Fremantle | Last 4 | Recent Ave against opp | Recent Ave at Ground | Season Ave | Predicted Score | |
| - yuk again | ||||||
| Sydney | ||||||
| Darren Jolly | 103.5 | 51.0 | 78.0 | 103.5 | 84.0 |
*
This will be a familiar theme for Fremantle this year unless Pav can get back to his typical self. As for Sydney you know my feelings, and for all the Sydney fans who have been emailing about my constant hate in the captains post, you actually got one player reviewed this week so shut it down for a while.
DHF Tip: Don’t be stupid!
Kangaroos vs Richmond (Eithad)
| Kangaroos | Last 4 | Recent Ave against opp | Recent Ave at Ground | Season Ave | Predicted Score | |
| - still squat | ||||||
| Richmond | ||||||
| Matthew Richardson | 117.2 | 89.0 | 112.8 | 117.2 | 109.0 | |
| Joel Bowden | 100.0 | 84.0 | 87.5 | 100.0 | 92.9 | |

From a DT perspective the Kangas style of play last week felt like a bolt of lightening hitting my penis, from a football enjoyment perspective it felt like 2hrs of electroshock therapy. Despite some big scores last week, including Harvey finally joining the party (131). That said I am still not sold on bringing Harvey in as a cash fowl yet, let along making him my captain.
For the Tigers it is the usual big boy Richo who has shown even more consistent form so far this year than 2008. You cannot go wrong with the big man.
DHF Tip: Richo
Geelong vs Brisbane (Skilled)
| Geelong | Last 4 | Recent Ave against opp | Recent Ave at Ground | Season Ave | Predicted Score | |
| Gary Ablett | 123.2 | 109.0 | 100.8 | 123.2 | 114.0 | |
| Jimmy “James” Bartel | 112.5 | 114.0 | 121.5 | 112.5 | 115.1 | |
| Joel Corey | 101.8 | 97.0 | 109.8 | 101.8 | 102.6 | |
| Joel Selwood | 92.8 | 93.0 | 92.0 | 92.8 | 92.7 | |
| Steve Johnson | 111.2 | 93.0 | 111.8 | 111.2 | 106.8 | |
| Paul Chapman | 106.2 | 92.0 | 85.5 | 106.2 | 97.5 |
| Brisbane | ||||||||
| - nothing much unless you are ready to roll the dice with Dalziell who hasn’t played Geelong yet | ||||||||
*
Geelong have enough DT’ers for the two of these teams, which is lucky because Brisbane are bringing sweet fuck all to the table this year. The GABLETT will return to the top 4 this week and Jimmy continues going gangbusters making it the third time this year he has had the highest predicted score. Steven Johno isn’t too shabby either.
DHF Tip: Tempting the football gods again tipping against Ablett, go Bartel!
Western Bulldogs vs Carlton (Etihad)
| Western Bulldogs | Last 4 | Recent Ave against opp | Recent Ave at Ground | Season Ave | Predicted Score | |
| Daniel Cross | 102.8 | 101.0 | 93.0 | 102.8 | 99.9 | |
| Carlton | ||||||
| Marc Murphy | 100.2 | 93.0 | 103.3 | 100.2 | 99.2 | |
| Bryce Gibbs | 109.8 | 73.0 | 120.5 | 109.8 | 103.3 | |
| Chris Judd | 105.0 | 102.0 | 103.3 | 105.0 | 103.8 |
*
Both teams will be hungry in this one, and with the free flowing styles through the middle I’d expect a lot of big DT scores. The Bulldogs haven’t inspired much confidence this year as far as consistent scores, while Gibbs and Judd look the goods for the Blues. Lookout for my boyee Gibbsy who has made a home for himself at Etihad.
DHF Tip: Going against the predictor on this one, Bryce Gibbs.
Melbourne vs Adelaide (MCG)
| Melbourne | Last 4 | Recent Ave against opp | Recent Ave at Ground | Season Ave | Predicted Score | |
| Cameron Bruce | 101.5 | 107.0 | 96.0 | 101.5 | 101.5 | |
| Adelaide | ||||||
| - to be honest not much on offer, maybe check out Tyson Edwards but there is plenty better | ||||||
*
Cameron is getting a popular push this week with Green out leaving an extra 30 touches for others, although it might just mean less of it for Melbourne. I’d be weary, but if you are going for something different he might be a good choice.
DHF Tip: Cameron Bruce
DHF Top 4 Captains for Round 5 (brought to you from by the new revolutionary Scoring Predictor):
Jimmy Bartel 115.1
Gary Ablett 114.0
Leigh Montagna 112.7
Matthew Richardson 109.0
DHF Captain Round 5 – Jimmy Bartel
My personal Captain Round 5 – Jimmy Bartel…here we go again – lock and load!
Who are you going with this week?

As I said on Coaches Box Podcast last night, if you have Ablett there is no reason to think you can out pick his average! He is going to average 110-120 over the course of the year and I define anyone to out average that over the course of the year! Look at last week. Its a week you would on his historical performances think he wouldn’t score well and he lead the league! Just pick him now and decide on who you are going to have as VC!

Molly
I keep Ablett captain, I doubt he will have many >100 scores throughout the year as he is a known performer year round. Unlike some other options…
btw Cox could do well this week against the Hawks who’s ruck division is the weakest in the league.
It is a fair point Molly, I did avoid Ablett’s 80 score this year though going with Bartel that week. At the end of the season we will know whether I can out pick Ablett’s average or not.
Great post as usual, Montagna has been one of my best pickups this year, still not ready to go with him as captain tho with ablett running amok
It is sposed to be wild and wet this weekend, could hurt the scores. I am going with Cox this w/e
I have none of those top 4. Cox for me.
By the way, there is a weaker ruck division than Hawthorn’s. Brisbane at the moment doesn’t even have a ruck division.
Great read as usual, but like Molly said I stick with Gaz week in and week out.
Watch out for Cloke boys, will rip the heart out of the Dons if Rocca is playing
