DHF’s AFL Round 2 Preview

April 3, 2009 by Jesse Penfold

DHF is coming into Round 2 full steam ahead after a strong showing across the board.  I am sitting at the head of the table, while TH was fooled into the Tiger hype, leaving him both out of pocket and angrier than the Pies with well…every umpiring decision.  Ultimately this led to an early season edition of Heffernan’s Spray for 2009, early as in it was actually being penned during the second half of first game for the season.

Adelaide ($1.61) v St Kilda ($2.35)

Friday Night – 8:00pm at AAMI Stadium

The gloss has gone straight off the blockbuster matchups of round 1, and this weeks Friday night kicks things off with a real nuts and bolts type of matchup for 2009. Don’t misjudge, however, these two sides will be fighting it out for top 8 positioning come years end and there is always something about a game under lights at AAMI packed with rabid Crows fans.

A preview to the season’s tactics will be on display as well. The rumours of the Crows learning the Hawks rolling zone were proved true last week as they were able to travel to the MCG and cause the shock of round 1 by taking the scalp of what many believed to be a real contender. Throw this against St Kilda’s slower style we could see a real collision of the strategic game, not to mention stats would make your typical DT players head explode.

Some quick notes to consider:
* Many still have a question mark over Thompson’s fitness;
* Put Nick Riewoldt in the same boat, a notoriously slow starter to seasons, he didn’t seem 100% last week against the Swans; and finally
* The Saints have a poor record travelling to Adelaide in the past.

Geelong ($1.07) v Richmond ($8.75)

Saturday Afternoon – 2:00pm at Skilled

Imagine you have just seen a team come together down the stretch of the season and nearly make the finals. The youth appeared like it was finally making a step up, and the older stars were on top of their game. During the off season you add a former premiership player and Brownlow medallist to your midfield, and everyone has hyped you up as a team expected to do big things in 2009. Then in round 1 you are slaughtered beyond recover, lose said premiership player to an injury and a once promising season is almost instantly written off as well it is the same old Richmond.

That is where everyone involved with the Tigers are at right now. And what do they get now? To play the most dominant team of the last two years, scratch that, a team who is one of most dominant stretch of play of all time. On a ground they are almost unbeatable at. To say that things are going to get worse for Richmond before they get better in an understatement. To say that this isn’t one of the more important games Richmond’s recent history would be another understatement.

If the Tigers suffer another obliteration like last week it could conceivably kill all hope. Geelong are as safe a bet as you will find this round, but it will be more about the effort and improvement Richmond show after suffering what Rich dubbed the most devastating loss he has experienced, from the perspective of being in the players group, last week.

Talk about piling on the Tigers supporters. After one of the most discouraging
