Gold Coast Team Name & Jumper Announced
September 4, 2008 by News
The new Gold Coast team to join the AFL will be known as the Gold Coast Football Club. The club will not have a nickname as is usually tradition in the AFL. The club’s jumper will consist of the colours red, white, blue and yellow. The club had a short list of five nicknames but the majority vote was for the club to be just known as the Gold Coast Football Club.
Many people will feel this is an anti-climax but the Gold Coast board have intimated that a nickname may emerge over the next few years.
What are your thoughts on the club having no nickname and the colours that they will wear? Leave us with your thoughts.

Well telling us the colours doesn’t really give you an idea of what the jumper will look like. How are they going to be put together? Vertical lines, horizontal lines, a V, some sort of f$%ked up freo anchor style pattern? GIVE US SOMETHING!
No nickname is a disgrace, how much are they paying the marketing team? They have snoozed this one, big time.
Edge,
Im sure if they released what the actual jumper looked like then we would have shown you. They have only given out the colours at this stage.
With all those colours, the jumper will look like a rainbow
It’s gonna be a drip feed for the next three years to buid tension and “interest” (yawn!). Adelaide must be stoked about the colour palette…
the board for the gold coast team a dickheads for not giving the team a nickname soon or later the teams going to be called the assholes or the homos so the board mite want to rethink this idea of have no nickname.
They’re too scared to announce a nickname.
Dunno why. Dockers and Power are terrible nicknames and got panned when they came in, but everyone got used to them anyway. Whatever GC17 announces will get panned, and then everyone will get to used to it anyway.
@Raf – Think you are right there with mentioning the Shockers and Powerless as good examples. Most of the current teams did not get their nicknames and mascot until years and years after they came in.
Geelong was not the cats until the 1920′s or something and Fitzroy was called the Mayblooms and Essendon was not called the Bombers until WW1 or 2 when an air base was based at Windy Hill. Richmond was not the Tigers until a legendary fan came to the ground with a tiger skin and the list goes on and on.
Over at Kick2Kick I will post the rest of how the nicknames came about after the finals.
i wanna no wat the jumper looks like!not just the colours
I hope, but don’t expect that this guernsey will be a “proper” footy guernsey. I mean a “V” vertical or horizontal strips or a diagonal line. What we will get is some hideous basketball top.
yeah they should post a pic of the team jumper i want to know what it looks like. I think they should give them the name of the gold coast surfers or something to that effect that sounds pretty good to me, god it isn’t that hard to think up a nickname.
What are all the fans going to do without a nickname? i certainly would not want to follow a team who dont have a nickname, and i think the dockers and the power are decent nicknames.
I recon they will need a nickname soon cos its pretty stupid they decided not to get one. Also its takin them a pretty long time to show us the jumper. how am i suposed to know if the jumper looks good with those colours or not?
