Jackson Trengove – 2008 AFL Draftee Profile
Just 12 days in and we have already hit our second two last names player – sadly Jackson Trengove does not rival Steele Sidebottom in this area (I mean I am pretty sure Steele Sidebottom played on Stiller’s team in Dodge Ball). While he doesn’t make the double last hall of fame, he might very well feature in the AFL’s. In fact Trengove could change the way key position defenders play the game forever. Unfortunately there is just this little problem called…injury.
Height: 196cm
Weight: 77kgs
Club: Calder Cannons/PEGS
Expected club: Sydney
Who we hope he turns out like: Trent Croad
Who we hope he wont turn out like: Jamie Graham
Over/Under career AFL games: 60 (take the under)
Chances THIS will happen: I really really hope not!
Yes…Injury. Before Trengove went down with a hamstring injury while training with Vic Metro was at the top end of every body’s draft board. Labeled as a key defender with speed, and a vertical leap synonymous with making thunderous spoils, he had teams dreaming about him anchoring their defense until well into the next decade. Then Jackson didn’t play football for five months.
All that said, he will not fall that far, and why should he? His injury may hinder his draft camp performances some, but clubs will look past that. They will look at his performance as a bottom ager who had his way with the likes of Kruezer, McEvoy and McKenna. They will see how his leap gave him the ability to play effectively in the ruck. They will notice how Lloydy recovered from ripping his ham-string off the bone by having a rejuvenated season this year and realize while no serious injury is good, there are worse out there (click on the above link to find out…if you are game).
In the end all this set-back will probably mean is a lucky club gets to steal a star with a pick he shouldn’t have been available at. And I for one hope it isn’t fucking Sydney!
