AFL Round 13 - St Kilda Saints v Fremantle Dockers - 7:40pm AEST Live from the Telstra Dome

Welcome to Friday Night Footy at the Dome - not the biggest blockbuster you’ll ever see, but a game with huge ramifications for the loser as St Kilda and Fremantle duke it out to kick off round 13. Couple of big changes mooted already:

Nick Dal Santo may come back in with Robert Harvey tipped to be a late withdrawal; and
Steven Dodd looks likely to get a game with reports Mark Johnson didn’t make the trip to Melbourne.

More info on late changes as they come to hand.

Looks to be more empty seats than people at the Dome. Im sure the AFL thought these two teams would be in better positions when they did the fixture.

Robert Harvey will infact take his place in the side so Dal will have a run with Casey over the weekend.

The Saints playing three first gamers; Jarryd Allen, Ben McEvoy and Robert Eddy. No doubt the Freo players will be under instruction to give them extra attention.

Mark Johnson has also made the flight over and will play, must have driven over the nullabor as he was reportedly not seen at the airport in Perth.

Channel 7 with an interview with Nick Riewoldt before the game, looks as though he had a prang on his BMX at some stage during the week. Big scab above the top lip.

The Pav calls Heads and calls correctly, the Dockers will kick to the right of screen.

1st Quarter

18:22 - Sandilands pushing forward at all opportunites, dragging King with him.

17:59 - Blake has the job on Tarrant. Good matchup as Blake can run all night.

16:39 - Hayes kicks to Goddard who kicks it back to Hayes 45m out from goal. Very loose marking from the Dockers as Hayes slots through the opening goal of the night.

16:11 - Lenny Hayes with his own footy early with 5 possessions.

15:38 - The Saints doing all the attacking a quick kick to the top of the square results in Grover giving away a free kick to Sam Gilbert. Gilbert goes back from point black range and has no problems at all. The Saints have the jump on the Dockers.

14:44 - A free kick out of the centre and the Dockers go forward. Jeff Farmer recieves a free kick for holding the man. From 50m out he kicks possibly the worst kick ive seen this year and sends it dribbling out of bounds in the forward pocket.

13:08 - Lenny Hayes just getting way too much space, not sure who has the job on him as no one has gone near him.

12:17 - McPharlin with the job on Riewoldt. The Saints getting plenty of numbers back and running hard from back to forward. Will be interesting to see if they can keep this up for the full four quarters as this can be a very taxing game plan.

10:59 - St. Kilda lead the early tackle count 14-0. This has been shocking start from the Dockers. They simply look like they felt they just had to turn up.

10:21 - Comical work from the umpire. The Pav recieves a free kick against Blake for blocking. Blake was simply holding his ground. Pav goes back from 40m out and slots the goal. Replays show Pav thought the free kick was against him and had thrown the ball to Blake. DISGRACEFUL DECISION!!!!!

8:35 - Welcome to the big league Rhys Palmer. Lenny Hayes setting the standard early, hammering Palmer with a bone jarring tackle. Palmer in the hands of the trainer and doesn’t look in good shape.

6:43 - Rhys Palmer out of the hands of the trainers now, looks as though he went the big vom on the half back flank.

6:14 - Lenny Hayes up to 12 possessions. Saints having plenty of it at the moment, but not going too far. Freo have plenty of men back. 13 now for Hayes, Crowley has gone to him.

5:21 - Riewoldt marks a Harvey pass. 37m out from goal according to Channel 7. Big kick for his confidence here and he goes back and makes no mistake. Saints get their third and stretch the lead to 14 points.

4:21 - Umpires red hot on the deliberate out of bounds early as Grover goes out and is pinged. Young Eddy with a shot from the pocket and puts it out on the full. Leonard Hayes up to 15 touches

4:06 - BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!! SHES ON FOR YOUNG AND OLD AT THE DOME. Rober Warnock cleans up Luke Ball who walks off the ground very groggy. Warnock is reported. Replays show Ball was knock out before he hit the ground.

3:57 - The resultant free kick gives Leigh Montagna a shot on goal from 15m out and he makes no mistake. The Saints look up for this one and you would have to think Mark Harvey will be reading the riot act to his boys at quarter time following this insipid start. Saints by 20 points.

3:22 - Wish they’d turn Steve McBurney’s microphone off. Every time I hear his voice I cringe.

2:56 - Ryan Murphy marks about 45m out from goal on a similar angle. Hes a beautiful kick Murphy and shows that by putting it straight through the middle. If the Dockers can sneak another one before quarter time then they will be pretty contempt with the way the scoreboard is looking.

1:57 - Mundy marks in the defensive 50 and gives the I’m holding the ball in the air lets slow it down routine. You would think one day a team would do that and then work on all out attack.

1:10 - Great play in the middle of the ground by Hayes. Kicks forward towards McEvoy who wears the footy in the melon however recieves a free kick for in the back. Goes back from 40m and slams it into the post. Joins an elite club of wearing a footy in the melon before having your first kick and then hitting the post. From memory Milham Hanna the President of that club wearing a footy to his nude nut on debut.

Qtr Time - As Bill Lawry would say “IT’S ALL HAPPENING”. The Saints have dominated this first quarter of playing leading by 15 points at the first break. Hayes has been brilliant with 16 possessions doing all the hard work. Luke Ball has been knocked out for the 45th time in his career, hes a hockey player so you would expect him back at some stage. The Dockers have been ordinary at best and can count themselves lucky that they aren’t further behind. You would expect some kind of spray from Mark Harvey during the first change. They just dont look up for the game.

Lenny Hayes currently doing a fitness test on his hamstring, looks as though he may have tweaked it. Would be a huge loss for the Saints.

Fremantle’s Michael Johnson also looking in some trouble with an ankle injury. Not moving well at all.

2nd Quarter

17:10 - Luke Ball back on the ground. The man is either not human or has been knocked out that many times that it just doesn’t matter anymore.

15:56 - Horrible start to the second quarter. I don’t think the footy can get much worse. It’s competitve stuff but the skills are at the level you would see in under 9’s. No one can hit a target.

14:07 - Rhys Palmer with 12 possessions. Just runs hard and know how to find the footy. Just needs to work on the defensive aspect of his game.

13:00 - Both teams moving the ball forward so slowly giving each other plenty of time to get numbers back and this game has pretty much turned into circle work.

11:54 - FINALLY!!! Gram gathers the ball on the wing takes on a Fremantle opponent runs to the 50m line and slots home the goal. Finally someone willing to take on the game. Replays show the shot at goal was touched on the line by a Freo player. Saints by 21 points.

11:41 - Ricky-O reports that Lenny Hayes has ice on his hamstring and you can put a fork in him for the night.

11:06 - CAN IT GET ANY WORSE. PURE DISGRACE. A blatant push in the back and mark from Goddard 15m out from goal. The umpire doesn’t pay the free kick and Goddard goes back and kicks the goal. Saints extend the lead to 27 points. The Dockers are really an insipid unit.

10:11 - Whilst theres Pav theres hope. Poor skill by hand by the Saints leads to Pav picking up the loose ball and goaling from 20m out. Dockers reduce the margin to 21.

8:31 - The skills of this game are getting worse.

7:30 - Long kick in to the Dockers forward line and The Pav takes a big pack mark. Goes back from 25m out and rams it home. Pav now has 3 of the Dockers 4 goals. Hes the great white hope for the Dockers tonight. Looks by far the most dangerous forward on the ground. Dockers have it back to the quarter time margin of 15 points.

6:30 - Taz at his best, marking outside 50 and then kicking into the man on the mark. The Dockers regain the pill kick forward and that man Pav marks again, plays on and then kicks the goal. The Saints don’t look to have too many answers for the Pav. He now has 4 and the margin is back to 9 points.

4:56 - Do the Dockers have a rule like the South African Cricket Team do with coloured players that they must have one side show bob look alike in the team each week. Chris Mayne taking over the mantle from Shaun McManus.

3:43 - Andy McQualter is really a reincarnation of Mark McGough. Both battlers of the highest order.

2:16 - The Dockers are on top now and half time probably can’t come quick enough for the Saints. Saints have all their numbers back.

1:00 - McBurney has plucked a free kick off the ball to Rhys Palmer. Was definetley there as Blake blokes him from running at the stoppage off the ball. Palmer shoots on goal from 40m out and hooks the kick through for a behind.

Half Time - St. Kilda lead 5.9 (39) to 5.2 (32). The siren blows for half time and puts us all out of our misery. The Saints dominated the first half and the early part of the second quarter before the Dockers came back hard late in that quarter. Not sure where the Saints are going to get their goals from as Riewoldt looks his usually insipid self (most overrated player in the game). Pavlich is the man for Freo having kick 4 of their 5 goals and the Saints don’t look to have an answer to him. Lenny Hayes looks gone for the match with a hamstring injury after a 16 possession first quarter. The Saints have been ordinary in second halfs this year so if you were a betting man you would have to favour the Dockers.

Grab a beverage of some sort (Tooheys Extra Dry for me) and join me shortly for the start of the second half.

3rd Quarter

20:00 - Lenny Hayes on the pine in full tracksuit.

18:36 - Steven King running like hes wearing ice skates. Tackles Palmer high who gives it off to Mundy kicks long and the Pav takes a grab in the goal square. He slots through the goal without any problems and its all square at the Dome (thanks Bruce). Pav now has 5 and I wouldn’t be shocked if he kicked 10.

16:51 - Dockers confidence levels beginning to grow. Moving the ball alot better even though they are over possessing it.

16:14 - Gilbert marks deep in the forward pocket. Kicks across the face of goal and Riewoldt marks (FINALLY HES DONE SOMETHING!!!). In true Riewoldt fashion though he kicks a point. Saints have the lead back.

15:00 - Riewoldt has 12 marks. I’ve never known someone to take so many grabs yet have such little influence on the game.

13:36 - the Footy is kicked to a dangerous spot in front of the Dockers goal. Two Saints players dive on it and are pinged for holding the ball. Josh Carr goes back and kicks the goal. Dockers back to a 4 point lead.

10:36 - Free kick to Sandilands 25m out from Fremantle’s goal following a ruck infringement. Pavlich giving plenty of curry to the first gamer McEvoy. Sandilands lets the Saints off the hook by missing the goal. He is dominating in the ruck.

9:33 - Steven King kicks to the goal square following a 50m penalty. Goddard is given a run at the ball and takes a strong contested mark in the goal square. Goes back from point blank range and kicks the goal. Saints back in front by a point.

9:14 - Luke McPharlin is being helped off the ground by the trainers with what looks to be a back or rib injury. Would be a huge loss for the Dockers.

8:23 - McEvoy marks about 50m out from goal. Goes back and has a shot for goal that falls short. The umpire finds a free kick for Riewoldt who goes back from 5m out on an acute angle and slots home the goal. Free kick looked pretty soft for mine. Saints now lead by 7 points.

7:44 - Ricky-O reports that McPharlin possibly has broken ribs.

6:59 - Momentum really has swung the Saints way. Robert Harvey marks about 45m out and fails to make the distance. Warnock marks for Freo in the defensive goal square. Even though they are only down by 7 points you really feel that the Dockers need the next goal to stop the Saints momentum.

5:31 - Jason Blake Public Enemy No.1 for the Umpires tonight. Has been pinged for three off the ball blocking free kicks.

5:01 - Luke Ball with 26 possessions, has been inspirational tonight after being knocked out early.

3:06 - SHOCKING, SHOCKING FOOTBALL MICHAEL JOHNSON. Fumbles the ball across half back after taking a mark and turns it over. The ball ends up with Gram who kicks one of his trademark running goals from outside 50. The Saints have really got on top ever since Sandilands went off the ground. Good news for Docker fans, the big man is back on. Saints by 12 points.

1:23 - Palmer recieves a handball from Sandilands about 30m out from goal, has a shot for goal that is just touched on the line by Maxy Hudghton. A big moment in the match that as the Dockers would have loved a late goal.

Three Quarter Time - Siren goes for 3/4 time. The Saints have an 11 point lead after it looked like the Dockers were going to open up the match in the early parts of the quarter. Pavlich looks the only match winner for the Dockers having kicked 5 goals in a low scoring affair. The Saints are working hard through the midfield with Riewoldt looking dangerous up forward since McPharlin went off. Both these teams have poor records this season when it comes to running out a game so it will be interesting to see what will transpire in this last term as it may come down to good old guts and determination and who really wants the game.

4th Quarter

16:15 - Jack Crowley marks 45m out directly in front. Tim Watson has labelled him a great shot on goal so has probably put the moz on him. Ahhhhhhhhh never doubted you Tim as the ball sails straight through the centre. Margin cut back to 5 points.

15:38 - Tarrant helped set up that goal and has already taken 2 or 3 marks this quarter finding a fair bit of space around half forward even though Goddard is playing as a loose man in defense.

13:44 - Intensity has definetley lifted in this game as Crowley is found free at half forward, has a flying shot at goal from 50m and misses. He really should have given that off to the free men he had inside 50.

13:04 - Ryan Murphy marks 55m out. Goes back and his a ping at the goals. The kick looks good off the boot and is just touched on the line by King. Dockers have the margin back to 3 points.

11:30 - Oh Maxy! Takes a grab on the defensive 50 and trys to chip it to Gram out near the boundary line. The kick is off line and it dribbles over the boundary line.

9:38 - Finally Nick Riewoldt is actually standing up and having an influence on the game. A Harvey kick into space in the forward 50 and Riewoldt runs on to it and snaps home a great goal from 40m out. That was Riewoldt’s 3rd goal. The Saints now lead by 9 points.

8:00 - This is probably the worst game of football ive seen this year and I watch plenty. Thank god the game is close.

6:35 - Looks as though the Saints have all 18 men back. Dockers just keep bombing it in and hoping for a big mark.

5:42 - Dumb play from the Dockers. They continually bomb the ball in long when they Saints have a heap of extra numbers back. They need to try and spot up someone just inside 50.

3:58 - Ryan Murphy marks for the Dockers 50m out from goal. Usually a good kick, he hooks this a little and it goes through for a behind. Margin back to 8 points.

2:13 - DUMB DUMB play again from Fremantle. Long kick from Soloman goes straight too a 3 on 1 in favour of the Saints and Riewoldt takes the easy mark.

1:27 - The Saints look home here.

Full Time - THANK GOD THAT IS OVER!!!!! Without doubt the worst game of football I have seen in a long while. No wonder the Saints are no good when they serve up that tripe. As for Fremantle they just play dumb football. Nick Riewoldt had 25 possessions and 18 marks for St. Kilda but was only really effective in the second half once McPharlin went off. Luke Ball was inspirational coming back after being knocked out and gathering 32 possessions along with the ageless Robert Harvey with 31 touches. Matthew Pavlich was great for Fremantle in the first half but went missing a bit in the second half. The Saints pushing so many numbers in the last quarter made it difficult for him. Rhys Palmer collected plenty of the ball for Freo with 27 touches, however his disposal continues to let him down. Thats all from me for now. Hopefully this game wasn’t as painful for you as it was for me.

Was Riewoldt crying?

Why are people so down on the Saints? Even though they have lost 3/4 it wasn’t like they were losing to inferior teams. Just because they aren’t the premiership contenders people expected at the start of the year all of sudden everyone thinks that Freo are better?

That was not pretty for Ball…ahh he is in my premo team too. Fuck it

Balls came down on that leg in shocking fashion, I couldn’t watch the replay.

Lenny Hayes is on fire.

God Hayes would be a big loss. Could also make some Dream Team owners cry.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!! SHES ON FOR YOUNG AND OLD AT THE DOME

Was hoping for more there, no punches…WEAK effort, as you would expect from these two sides.

Top game, no score in this quarter - makes the game updates easy Balls

Hayes out, god.

Frrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeooooooooooooooo…… , whoever thought fremantle were out in he first quater shame on you. I just hope they arent just infront at 3 quater time, i think il have a heart attack.

GANG TACKLED!!! Bruce pumped

HAHA Andy McQualter.

my eyes are bleeding watching this game

I took the 2.30, fair to say my emotions have gone from pumped to cringing at the thought of having to watch the hard earned go missing in an awful second half

I haven’t watched or herd the game, are the skills truly that bad????????

Pretty horrible, thank god there’s a bloke out there called Pavlich who’s lifting the standard

Pretty standard Nick Riewoldt gift there

BLOW THE SIREN AND PUT US OUT OF OUR MISERY!!!
