Matthew Broadbent - 2008 AFL Draftee Profile
Matthew Broadbent is a hard running defender from South Australia who also has the ability to go into the midfield and play a run with role. He played well at the Under 18 Championships without being a standout. Expect him to be drafted somewhere in the 2nd round.

Broadbent has very clean hands and is rarely seen double grabbing at the footy. Even though he has played the majority of his football across half back he has a great tank which allows him to go into the midfield to primarily play run with roles on the opposition’s strong midfielders. He is a very courageous player and will not shirk a contest. His pace is adequate enough that it won’t have a detrimental affect on him at the top level.
He is capable of winning his own ball and is also very effective receiving the ball on the outside due to the long penetrating kick that he possesses. When he receives the ball his decision making is very good and will generally find a team mate in the best position. Broadbent is a very solid all round player who will fit nicely into most AFL teams.
Broadbent’s body is pretty well developed so the physical nature of the AFL game should not be too much of a problem for him. Combine that with the fact that he has played senior football at SANFL level which gives him the experience of playing against men.
By his own admission, Broadbent’s skills can let him down on occasions and this is something that he will need to work hard at to consistently use the ball well.
