Robert Harvey weighs in on Saints future and Ben Cousins
Recently retired great, Robert Harvey (recently signed as an assistant coach at Carlton), has weighed in on St. Kilda’s immediate future without him, giving them every chance at a flag in the next few seasons:
“If a few in the middle take that next step up, and the young guys come on, next year is a possibility,” he said.
“They finished fourth this year. They’re a huge chance in the next two to three years.”
…
“They’ve got their processes right now,” he said.
“(Fitness adviser) Dave Misson has been fantastic. I reckon they’re as close now as they’ve ever been.”
He also discussed the topic on everybodies lips, especially if you are a Saints supporter right now, Ben Cousins:
“I was a similar player to Cousins, the way he runs,” he said. “I think that sort of player, even though you get a bit slower, can work just as hard as the other midfielders. I reckon he can play for another five years. But I don’t know where his head’s at. I don’t know whether he’s still a risk or not. It’s a big if. But I reckon he’d be sensational.”
In reality Harvey is probably just saying the right thing - to be honest St. Kilda were just making up the top four numbers this year, a year that did not see a number of great clubs setting themselves apart (take a look at how they snuck into the top four, and the fact they were only one victory from 8th spot - not to mention their performance in the finals against the Cats and the Hawks).
As far as their premiership chances go they are still a long weigh away from the top clubs and certainly need the boost of a Ben Cousins level player if they expect legitimately contend next year - but with Cousins they also need to avoid the likes of this.

I think Cousins would be good for the Saints. Ray and him are similar players that they just run, run and run and I think especially with Harvey gone, they need that midfield running ability. They also can kick goals which is what they also lack - goal kicking midfielders…
N Carroll down back could also help as MaGuire and Hudgton always get injured and so some back up could be helpful.
