Tyrone Vickery - 2008 AFL Draftee Profile
When you talk about draft stocks rising, you are talking about this man - Tyrone Vickery. A tall, mobile ruckman who also shows a good ability to play a key forward position, Vickery has even been compared to the marquee ruckman of the draft - Nick Naitanui. One of the key reasons was his excellent showing for Vic Metro against WA in the final of the NAB U/18 Championships. So let’s take a closer look at him.
Height: 200cm
Weight: 86kg
Position: Ruck/Key Forward
Club: Sandringham Dragons
Who we think he may turn out like: Brad Ottens
Who we hope he doesn’t turn out like: Jason Laycock
Depending on who you ask, Vickery could be taken as high as 4 by Port Adelaide, or fall to a team lower such as Richmond, or even Collingwood according to delusional Pie fans.
Physically, he is a wonderful fit for the modern game. Tall and athletic, he moves very well, and is developing a strong pair of hands. He has a good leap which makes him a strong tap ruckman, as shown by his ability to hold his own at the centre bounces against Naitanui in the U/18 Champs.
He shows a good feel for the game, especially when he is playing up forward where his leading is strong and smart. His footy brain is also on display when rucking, where he does show an ability to change things up by using different angles and approaches if required to try and have a bigger impact.
Like the majority of young ruckman, Vickery does still have a lot of muscle to gain. He made a start on it this year, and it was notable how different his attack on the football was with a bit more size about him. There is also a quiet rumour about some knee troubles, which has caused many a good youngster to slide come draft day.
Where do you see Vickery going? Will his stocks just keep on rising or will he fall to a team like the Tigers? Let us know below!

For sure, the amount of talented big guys in this draft is incredible.
However, as is always the big question, will their talent translate to the next level? Vickery’s excellent athletic ability should hold him in good stead I would think.
And Laycock deserves the hiding imo, he is one of the most laziest players I have ever seen. I even rate Bradley over him.
Tall guys always take longer to develop which imo sees them as a greater risk when drafting.
